Beavers Get High ACT Scores

Sophomore’s Vince Hoppel and Logan Kronstain both scored ACT scores in the 30’s. Vince is a sophomore boy at our school who participates in band and choir year round while doing swim as a sport in the winter. Hoppel said, “I’ve never taken ACT prep or any practice tests, I kind of just went in there and winged it.” He scored a 33 with a perfect on the reading portion. He has never taken the ACT before, he planned on taking it once to get the idea of it but he scored another higher than expected. Hoppel said, “I didn’t even study.” Vince is a very intelligent young man with earning straight A’s and managing a 4.0 GPA while being involved with outside school activities.

Logan Kronstain is also a sophomore boy at our school who scored a 30 on his ACT. Logan is also participating in choir and band all year. Kronstain said, “I didn’t study or prepare for the test, it was basically a test run.” Logan has never taken the ACT or ACT prep that would prepare him for the class. Logan manages to have a 3.9 GPA while participating in extracurricular activities.

Lady Beavers Beat Saint Clairsville

On Wednesday night the girls basketball team played the semi final sectional game at home against Saint Clairsville. They protected the Beaver Dome and won 58-42. This wasn’t like any other typical winning celebration, because this is the first sectional game the girls basketball team has won since 2007 which is ten years. The girls have prepared for this game for the whole season. They wanted to make history, and indeed they did.

Senior Madison Roberts had a double-double on Wednesday night. She managed to rack up 16 points and 10 rebounds. Also Freshman Jenna Ricardo also had 16 points along with her dynamic duo Madison Roberts. The two girls have been chosen for the district 5 games while Roberts was also chosen for the OVAC all star game. The head coach, Stephanie Coie called them the dynamic duo. The girls are all around good athletes, but together they are even better and more successful.

Senior starter Lexi Merriman tacked on 6 points and 3 rebounds. While sophomore Madison ours had 9 points and 4 rebounds from coming off the bench. Junior starting point guard Kierra Taylor had 5 points and 3 assists before her accident at the end of the third quarter. Taylor got tangled up with another player and hurt her ankle. She was in so much pain she could not return to the court but came to the bench with ice towards the middle of the 4th quarter. Taylor will not return for the girls sectional final game held at Home on Saturday against Minerva at 7pm.

Spring sports

Now that spring is on the verge, many sports are finally starting up once more. Baseball, softball, tennis and track. Baseball cuts around 6-7 each year and have about 25 people that actually make the team. One of the players that have been playing for many years before high school league, thinks this season will be a very good and well played season. He thinks the team will go very far and have a good win:loss ratio. Many of the high school kids are very excited for track season for many reasons, the 3 great coaches, the wide selection of events, and the overall atmosphere of the sport. Each kid can find an event that they are best at and then train with one of the coaches to improve and perfect that event. There has been a ton of successful track participants from this school is previous years that have made it farther than districts.. Some kids may be good at multiple and they can compete in each one. Track is easy for kids to find a sport they are good at if they don’t like any others offered. This year will be the first year of a boys tennis team, each year the girls have a very well played season and now any boy who wants to play as well has the chance to. Softball is off to a good start as well with many good freshman coming up to the team, a few may be able to claim a spot on varsity due to their skills they offer to the team.

Beaver Local Community Spreads Kindness to Family in Need

Tragedy struck in Beaver Local School District when a Beaver Local family’s house recently burned down. The house and all their belongings were a total loss. As soon as the school district heard about this, people sprung into action collecting donations for the family.
So far, the Beaver Local community has collected over $1000. In addition to monetary donations, community members have donated toys and clothing for the kids of the family. Boyce United Methodist Church donated three giant bags full of new toys. So many generous people from all over the community have donated different items for the family’s needs.
A young girl in 5th grade, Katelyn M, took it upon herself to collect money from her church and neighborhood. She brought in over $200 to donate to the family. A junior, Rebecca Scarcella, donated an outfit and a toy for each child. Also, a sophomore, Garrett Givens donated a new Beaver Local athletic bag filled with pajamas, slippers, shoes and more.
It is amazing how generous the Beaver Local community is when tragedy strikes. The outpour of kindness has really touched the family’s hearts. The family is currently working on getting back on their feet.

Swim team 2017 ovacs

Beaver Local boys swim team recap
The 2016 Beaver Local swim team, also known as the best, successful, hardworking, and fun team of our area, had a pretty great season so far.
The beginning of the season was great for the guys, they have almost been undefeated this whole season. At the start they had an abundance of new swimmers who had no clue on how to swim, and weren’t as fast as previous members, but with training from our hard working and dedicated coaches, they turned out mighty fine. Their coaches provided the necessary yardage as well as proper technique instructions for each swimmer’s stroke, turns, and dives.
For instance, Sam Brothers, a sophomore who has never swam before, is now looking at a spot in our boys 200 free relay due to hopping in the water with swimmers that have been swimming for up to 11 years. The coaches, along with other members of the team, corrected his stroke. He went from a mid 30 50 free to now a 25 50 free! Drew Mccoy is the only senior man and has worked very hard with his focus on becoming a better swimmer in hopes to achieve better times. So far, he has succeeded by having one of the fastest 100 free and fastest 50 free times

This season so far, the boys’ 200 medley relay broke their previous time of 1.56 with a time of 1:52. Corey Snow, a junior, broke his breaststroke record once more, for the second year in a row. The girls’ team also defeated their 400 free relay record! Josh Littleton broke the school’s record at a 1:02, and everyone has hopes of breaking theirs once more at the sectional and district meets. At OVACs, the boys medley got podium for 3rd place out of 25 teams, and at sectionals are seated high as well.

Mrs. Hendricks

Mrs. Hendricks is a wife, mother and teacher. She is married to Jeff and has two sons, Mitch and Bryce. She grew up in the big city of Elkton. She attended Elkton Elementary, then went to Beaver Local middle school and high school. Mrs. Hendricks was a varsity cheerleader for four years and was involved in the school paper. Mrs. Hendricks is an English teacher at Beaver Local Highschool, and has been for 19 years now. Mrs. Hendricks enjoys golfing, traveling, boating on the family boat, reading, biking, hiking and cooking. Mrs. Hendricks has been to Italy, Germany, Poland, France, and Austria.
Mrs. Hendricks went into education because she wanted to be that teacher who was passionate about something, and she wanted to inspire a student to do something; and encourage students to believe in their dreams. She has always taught grades 9-12. Mrs. Hendricks states, “If every student just has that one teacher, high school will be better for them.”
As a student, we often get frustrated with Beaver Local and wonder why a teacher would ever come back here after they graduated. Mrs. Hendricks said that she didn’t think she was ever coming back, but she was teaching part time at another school. Her mother worked at Beaver Local and made her put in a resume, which resulted in her getting hired. Mrs. Hendricks said that coming back to Beaver Local was a hard adjustment because there were still teachers here from when she was a student. I asked Mrs. Hendricks if she would go back and change coming here if she could, she answered, “This might sound corny and cliche but it feels like home here because I’m from here and know a lot of people still.”
Mrs. Hendricks claims that the technology is definitely the biggest change from when she attended Beaver Local. Things haven’t changed much in the district, but they have in the education, especially the requirements. Mrs. Hendricks states, “It is always changing which is good to benefit the students.” Mrs. Hendricks is constantly changing her teaching ways to keep up with the new technology to make it a better environment for her students to learn. The use of technology has helped her in researching different lesson ideas. It has helped students with writing essays, and makes it easier to access information to help them. For the last 22 years, she has witnessed testing changes 4 times: ninth grade proficiency, OGT, PARCC and AIR testing.  She is always adapting to the changes. Mrs. Hendricks states, “If you don’t change, it makes you stale and ineffective.”
A lot of students love Mrs. Hendricks because of her personality, and she can relate very well to all of us. She is very helpful and understanding. Mrs. Hendricks cares about everyone of her students individually. I, personally, have been inspired by Mrs. Hendricks in many ways, such as, to always be the bigger person, and always give your best effort. I hope Mrs. Hendricks always stays with Beaver Local, because everyone deserves the chance to have her.
