Theraputic Riding

Therapeutic Riding

Therapeutic riding has many benefits to it. Therapeutic riding has benefits for people of all ages. Some of those benefits are improving motor skills, improved motor coordination and balance, improves core strength, and helps with social skills. After the select riding activities the rider does with the horse, the rider is more confident, and the rider performs better with day to day activities. Such as, talking, balance, and coordination. Therapeutic riding has a lot more benefits than just these. Most of the time, people with disabilities often limit their movement and interaction. So, this therapy would help them get the opportunity for independence and mobility.

If Beaver Local had an equine sport, students with disabilities would really benefit from it. It could get them interacting with people and it could help them with school relative activities like sports. Since these students don’t really get accepted for sports, the therapeutic riding could be a sport for these students. Like most sports, people are passionate about them, and these students could really enjoy doing something like this. That way, they could even make friends with people that like the same thing as them.

Class of 2017!

As the end of the year approaches, seniors and teachers are readily preparing for the departure of yet another senior class. Winding down, emotions of nervousness and excitement are all over the place. The Beaver Blog asked some seniors how they feel about the end of the year and their plans for the future. We even asked some teachers how they were dealing with the approach of graduation.
I first interviewed Sabrina Dowd who is eagerly awaiting graduation. She is preparing for graduation by putting her all into her school work for the end of the year, filling out scholarships, and “Actually coming to school”. Her plans for after high school are to attend YSU in the fall and major in Biology. When asked why she chose this major, she said, “It is my favorite subject and I think I will excel in it”. In addition, her tips for following seniors are this, “Staying organized is key and keep up with your reading”.
I then interviewed Matthew Ludwig who is nervous yet excited to graduate and leave Beaver Local. Matt claimed his strategy for success was “to get good grades and call it a year.” Matthew is attending YSU in the fall and majoring in Journalism. When asked why he chose this path for college he said, “I like to express my views on topics and share my opinion.”
I, myself plan on attending YSU in the fall also. I will be majoring in social work. I am beyond ecstatic to graduate and experience what the future holds for me. As for advice to the upcoming senior class, give high school your all because it really is worth it in the end.
On the other hand, I also asked Senior Advisor and English teacher Mrs. Hendricks how she felt on the seniors this year graduating. “It’s like I’m losing a part of myself” she explained. When asked how prepared she thinks we are for the future, she said, “No matter how much we teachers can try to prepare you for the real world, it’s never enough. You have to experience things, it’s life changing”. Mrs. Hendricks has been working hard all year to prepare us seniors for life after high school. She has given us much responsibility, sass, and kept us busy to teach us how to deal with stress and multitasking. Though some may not see it yet, she has taught us many life lessons. Hendricks stated, “You won’t realize it until you get out into the real world, so many kids come back and thank me because just like you they don’t know it at first but I really am helping you prepare for the future.”
With only 38 more days for us seniors and 59 more days until graduation, students and teachers are readily preparing to say goodbye to the class of 2017. Hopes are high and hearts are pounding at the thought. Thank you to all the Beaver Local faculty and staff. You have shaped us into the bright young adults we are today! In saying that, Good Luck to all the seniors on your future plans!

Beaver Local Hosts County Honors Band and Choir Performance

Pictured above are the Beaver Local Band and Choir

Thirty-five Beaver Local students will represent the school as the county band and choir comes to Beaver Local on Saturday, March 25. Fifteen Beaver Local band members made the cut to complete the 69 total members of the honors band. Our school has the most kids from any one school in the county representing the Beaver Local band and choir. Students from across the county spent their day at Beaver Local on Friday practicing their music. The actual performance is Saturday, March 25 at 2:00 at Beaver Local High School.

County Honors Band and Choir is a collaborative group of students from all across Columbiana County. They audition by performing a select piece of music in front of band directors and choir conductors for a seat. One of the main reasons our school is hosting this prestigious event is our brand new facilities. People from all across the county will come to see the Honors Band perform. This would not be possible without the guidance of Band Director Matt Newman and Choir Director Allison Hamilton.
Mr. Newman has done amazing work organizing and working to bring the county band to Beaver Local and show the county what Beaver Local has to offer. He has been Beaver Local’s Band director for a total of fifteen years, helping not only to fully represent Beaver Local’s pride in our school but also running the band as a respected program. He hopes to continue building Beaver Local’s band program to maintain the good our band is doing for our school and our community.

Mrs. Hamilton is known for her stunning choir performances and musicals. Her hard work and dedication is shown best by the wide array of students who participate in her program. She pulls out talent from all students who step into her classroom and onto her stage. Hosting the county choir concert gives Beaver Local a chance to show off the amazing music programs Mrs. Hamilton and Mr. Newman have built in our district.

Beaver Local’s Biggest Battle

Battle of the classes has been a competitive event at Beaver Local for many years now. Each grade level has their own team of representatives that participate in various strange and exciting games. The games are chosen by several teachers, and all students are able to sign up for the games. There has always been a small price to pay to see the Battle of the Classes each year, this year it will be one dollar, even participants. Class shirts are also being sold around the school by class representatives, most are 10 or 15 dollars. The games will take place March 23rd during sixth and seventh periods.

Each of the four classes must have representatives volunteer to take place in the events. No students can take place in more than one event, this is to prevent only several students participating. There are events for everyone though, most need about 4 people, and skin the snake requires eight participants. Some games require strength and speed, while others require strategy and technique.

There are two new games this year; skin the snake, and balloon buster. Other games that are being brought back are; drag race, tennis shoe relay race, baby bottle chug, dizzy bat, and the most popular of them all, the tug -O- war. Tug -O- war is worth the most points and is always the last and most competitive game. The other games are also important though, as each point is crucial before the final tally is taken. The winning class isn’t awarded with a trophy or prize, but bragging rights around the school.

School Budget Cuts

In a recent news article in a local paper, they talk about budget cuts and how those cuts will cause two staff members at Beaver Local to lose their position. With the chance of losing almost $500,000, the two staff positions to be riffed are an executive secretary and an eighth-grade teaching position which were approved by the Board of Education on Monday, March 13. These two staff positions will be eliminated at the end of the current school year.

While the elimination of these positions may not personally affect me, the cuts will surely affect other staff members and other students. Although the school has already eliminated two positions, there will also have to be other cuts throughout the district to come up with the $500,000. Not knowing why the district is losing so much money, the District Treasurer, Stacy Williams, will be attending a meeting in Columbus to voice her displeasure in the loss. The main reason for the cut is believed to be enrollment, at which has gone down significantly over the past five years. This means that either A, graduating classes are getting smaller, B, parents are not enrolling their kids at Beaver Local, or C, students are transferring to other schools.

Further along the line, if enrollment continues to drop, then more money may be lost. If that is to happen, then there can possibly be even more budget cuts made throughout the district. Even if the school was to gain any money in the future, the amount would still be fairly small, most likely along the lines of $18,000.

Due to the school losing nearly $500,000, the district has eliminated two staff positions and may have to make more cuts throughout the district. The main reason the district is losing so much money is believed to be because of enrollment going down which can be affected by multiple factors. Depending on how enrollment goes over the coming years, the school district will either gain money or have to make more sacrifices than those already made.
