Net Neutrality

Net Neutrality
By: Todd Stewart

It is a very sad day as we have just lost net neutrality yesterday. Net neutrality was where the FCC had everything on the internet equal and everyone had an equal opportunity to put whatever they wanted on the internet. However the FCC chairman Ajit Pai and the FCC voted that this equality was unnecessary. However it is a tad bit strange that the chairman had a say when he worked for Verizon as a lawyer. Since we lost net neutrality big companies will monopolize the industry and no one will have a fair chance to put their content out on the internet. Companies like Comcast, Verizon, AT&T and multiple others can decide who gets fast and slow internet speeds. What commercials will go in and basically what can be put on your phone and tv. They can put up ads and commercials to the highest bidder. But when we had net neutrality everyone could have a fair shot. Also without net neutrality most likely we will have to buy social media, texting and calling, etc on top of our data which is ridiculous. Basically without net neutrality the internet will forever be changed.

Beaver Local Rocks

BEAVER LOCAL ROCKS!

Since the first day of school, students in grades K-12 have had the chance to discover one of these colorful rocks. At the back to school bash before school started, students were able to design and color their own rock that would be hidden throughout the school. The rule is that once you find a rock, you have to re hide it somewhere in the school so someone else can have fun looking for it. Many of the younger students jump for joy when finding a rock because they know it’s their turn to hide it. This rock project has been an exciting bonus here at Beaver Local and is enjoyed by kids of all ages. So keep your eyes peeled as you venture around the school; you might be the next one to find a Beaver Local rock!

Student athletes

What’s it like being a student athlete? What comes first sports or school? Being a athlete isn’t just about excelling on the field and court. It’s about excelling in the classroom. For example Luke Call has managed to maintain over a 4.0 in the classroom and dominate on the Football field. We sat down with Luke and talked to him and he told us “Homework and studying always comes first at his house before anything else”. But sometimes that’s not always an option for some of the kids out there. So what are some ways that you can get your homework done or get some studying in? First off you should talk to your coach about it and see if there’s a way you could get some studying done before practice. Take the Football team for instance they’ve set up a system to where they lift, study and practice. Sounds like a lot doesn’t it? But the system works on Monday’s and Wednesday’s they lift on Tuesdays and Thursday they study. Of course they still practice on all of those days but they are still getting their work done. We went in and examined a “study table” which is what they call it and it’s all business no play. It is expected of them to have no grade lower than a C. If they have a C or lower or any missing assignment it is mandatory to be working on something. For those who have higher than a C they are allowed to watch film but most usually use the time to get their work done. So what’s the reasoning behind it? It’s for them to be able to sit in a working environment and want to finish and study what they have to in order to succeed. The study table is the real deal and is taken seriously at all times and hopes to get the Football team mentality prepared to tackle any challenge thrown their way.

Vegas Golden Knights home opener

The Vegas Golden Knights play their first ever home opener tonight at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas at 10pm EDT & it will be on NBCSN (Comcast channel 30 in East Liverpool). And the time I’m writing this, the Golden Knights are in 2nd in the Pacific Division & they are 2-0-0 in their first ever season. And also Marc-Andre Fleury will always be a Penguin. Tonight’s game: Arizona Coyotes @ Vegas Golden Knights & Detroit Red Wings @ Dallas Stars. Also congrats to the Golden Knights for being the first team in NHL history for going 3-0-0 in their first ever season. And they did a great tribute to the people who lost their lives in the Vegas Shooting back on Oct 1,2017 & also to the first responders who helped save lives. And they had a 58 seconds of silence to honor the 58 people who were killed back on October 1st. And at the end of the first period the Golden Knights lead 4-1. Then at the end of the 2nd period the Golden Knights lead 5-1. Then during the 3rd period the Coyotes got 1 goal & the final score was Golden Knights 5- 2. And Vegas got their first ever home win of the regular season. And if Fleury is seeing this Let’s Go Golden Knights! & I hope to see the Golden Knights play the Pens on Feb 6,2018 & I hope to see Fleury’s return to Pittsburgh next February. And to end this #GoKnightsGo & #VegasStrong. And my thoughts & prayers are still going out to Vegas & I do hope that tragedies like the Vegas Shooting back on October 1,2017 don’t happen again.

Friday Night Lights

Friday Night Lights
This Friday the Beavers (5-1) will be taking on the Wildcats (0-6) at their home field. The odds are definitely in our favor this week but you never know what can happen. Speaking from a cheerleaders point of view we cannot wait to go cheer on our boys! I’d like to introduce Michael Clendenning for a few comments on the team. He stated “ I think we’ll do really great this week. The boys have been working hard this week during practice and they’re looking good. We’re starting to play more as a family than ever! I can’t wait to see everyone supporting this Friday!” I’d also like a few words from a member of the drumline Sunni Sacconi. Sunni says “ I and the rest of the band are super excited to play during the game this Friday! The drumline has accomplished a lot this year. With the help of Joel, Mr. Kidd, and Mr. Newman we’ve become amazing this year. I’d like to thank the student section for enjoying us so much during the Liverpool game!”

Matt Newman

Matt Newman Beaver Local band director
By Dalton Murphy

Matt Newman, funny, kind, hard going. All of these words can only describe half of Mr. Newman. Mr. Newman is the Beaver Local band director. Newman works hard for what he makes us into, even though we hate him at moments. Newman takes his time to get us to be perfect as a band, and as a family. He took his time to get us started during the summer, every Tuesday, even through school. He helps us when we have problems, gives us extra time to memorize things.

I have known Newman since the last nine weeks of my fifth grade year. Me and Newman became friends soon, we became family.“I have dedicated students, very blessed to have work ethic that runs throughout my band. Freshman through seniors.” Matt Newman stated. What do you think about Mr. Newman? I asked. “Mr. Newman was my band director through middle school and he was the sweetest! He made me want to continue through high school but I wasn’t able to. I still see him while cheering and it makes Friday night’s way more fun!” Alex Ward stated.

Cheerleaders work with the band. Half of their cheers go with our stand tunes.
Newman works hard to get us to the point where we look like precessional. He helps the smallest instruments to the largest. Newman in my eyes, works harder than any other teacher. “They give up their time and they don’t waste the band’s or my time. We have a dedicated young staff and a willing group that is after creating excellence in musically, marching and maneuvering, and cool visuals. We do a lot of repetition and work hard on music and marching basics and fundamentals.” Newman also stated. All of the band players come together and help each other. We are family, Newman included. Cheerleaders and football players. We are all family, and that’s what it will be till the end of Beaver Local.

Thank you for reading my article on Matt Newman.

Bounce back

After a crushing loss last week the beaver Local football team looks to get back on track. They fell 38-0 to Indian Creek last Friday.Talking to stand out corner Chris Yanni he’s looking to “get the bad taste out”. What does that mean? It means that the Beavers are planing to come out swinging in the game on Friday against Martian Ferry’s football team. The beavers are sitting at 6-2 going into week 8 and are looking for another W in the win Column. After having to step out of the lineup this week jacob Kane will have to sit due to a concussion. Instead Donavan Garcia will start at corner this Friday night. Come out and watch the beavers play in one of their last home games this season kickoff starts at 7:15.

Here’s to the Friday Night Lights

This one is for the players who will soon be putting on their pads, jersey and helmets for the last time. For the boys who will be playing the game they love for the last time, on the field they have grown up on. This one is for the boys who will look up at the scoreboard one last time and think of the plays, tackles, wins, losses, away games, home games, locker rooms, the team, coaches, and cleats. This is for the coaches who will give their last locker room speech to the group of young men who won’t be there to represent the team anymore. Here’s to the sound of the last whistle blow. Here’s to the underclassmen who will take those old numbers our boys used to wear. This one is for the Friday night lights. This one is for the girls who dedicate their Friday nights cheering for the boys. For the girls who have been cheering together since Little Beavers. Here’s to the girls who will put in their bow one last time and call their very last cheer. Here’s to the girls who will take one last picture with the squad, put on their uniform for the last time, and do their dance at halftime just one more time. This one’s for the coach who’s more like a friend. Here’s to the students who will play the national anthem one last time. To the students who will perform their last half time, play their last measure, and warm up their instrument just one last time. Here’s to the color guard girls who will twirl their flag one last time. Here’s to the last time they will put on red lipstick and dance with the band one last time. Here’s to the kids in the student section who will call “give me a B” just one more time. Who will dress for the theme one last time. Here’s to running the field and trips to the concession stand for the last time. Here’s to the memories, cheers, wins, losses, bonds, spirit and pride that will always hold a special place in our hearts. Here is to our Friday nights. Here is to the team, to the cheerleaders, to the band, the color guard, the fans in the stands and the game that has united our small town. Here is to the last times, here’s to new beginnings.

Here is to the seniors. Here’s to the memories. Here’s to the class of 18.
