Whodunit?

For the first time in a few years, BLHS Masquers club has organized a play -not a musical- to showcase the acting side of club members. For auditions, students had to prepare a monologue and perform them for Mrs. Hamilton, organizer of the club. In the end, Mrs. Hamilton decided to pick upperclassman(except for one freshman) to be the actors. The premise of the play is a murder and a theft at a school assembly. It may sound corny(and kind of is), but I think it will turn out well. Even if the play is a total flop, it has been one of the most fun after school activities I have ever participated in. If you are a BLHS student, I highly, highly recommend you auditioning for the spring musical(or at least be on the crew). Even if you are not an actor, I think it will be an extremely fun experience that everyone should try at least once.

BL Powder Puff

BL Powder Puff
By: Todd Stewart

Once every school year we here at Beaver Local have a powder puff game between the junior and senior girls. Normally every year the seniors take the win, but this year it came to a draw! It came to a very close tie as the juniors were very close to winning the game with a second touchdown! One of the highlights of the game was when cheerleader Josh Littleton stole something of the juniors! Kameron Griggs from the juniors team was in pursuit of the theft but went back to the juniors empty handed.

Confirmed EF1 tornado in Calcutta on November 5,2017

Calcutta,Ohio- There was a severe thunderstorm back on November 5,2017 that made the NWS in Pittsburgh issue a Tornado Warning for Columbiana (OH) & Beaver (PA) counties until 7:45pm EST. And the tornado was an EF1 on the Enhanced-Fujita scale & it had winds of 90mph (144.841km/hr). And the Walmart & Kmart in Calcutta didn’t let anyone out because of the ongoing tornado warning. I’m glad that we’re no reported injuries from this tornado. Most of the damage is mostly trees that were uprooted & that were leaned over. Also one garage was flattened. And most of the damage is over near the Plaza Dr part of town. And the Calcutta YMCA has a few of its HVAC units taken off of the roof & I guess that one of the room is a total loss.

Beaver Local Masquers to Present “The Great High School Whodunit”

With a step through the doors of the Beaver Local High School Auditorium, welcome to Dudley High. Sit, relax, and meet the staff and students of the school who are prepared to welcome you into the Dudley High community. A comedy fit to entertain even the youngest of ages, the Beaver Local Masquers Club is delighted to present “The Great High School Whodunit” on Friday, November 17 at 7:00pm. Tickets will be available at the door for $5.

Dudley High School is the home to many different and unique characters. A smitten principal (Jeremy Balmenti), a scattered secretary (Lauren Millhorn), a no-nonsense vice principal (Morgan Cox), a persistent coach (Logan Kronstain), an unfortunate security guard (Lucas Voorhees), and suave-styled english teacher (Tanner Hockman) coordinate the staff, and while joined by their students, a school spirited class president (Grace Covert), a vocal social activist (Jordan Smith), two football jocks (Vince Hoppel and Sawyer Meek), and an insubordinate couple (Olivia Brant and Tyler Hall), they invite you to join them in celebrating and expressing the utmost gratitude toward the schools’ primary benefactors, the ostentatious Dudley family (Jon Atkins, Katrina Malcolm, Hannah Braslawsce). However, in a surprise turn of events, the ring prized by Mrs. Dudley is concluded to be stolen, launching an investigation by two slick and cunning agents (Corey Snow and Alexa Schwerha), to undercover the underlying motive and recover the stolen jewel.

Comedy and mystery combine to present on stage a series of unforeseen and unfortunate events that will leave the audience on the edge of their seats, twisting and turning with the plot to uncover the stolen jewel.

College Credit Plus at Beaver Local

Hello Beavers! Today I would like to inform you about a college credit opportunity we have here at Beaver Local.

College Writing 1 is a class taught at Beaver Local High School that can earn you a college credit. These are called College Credit Plus (CCP) programs. The course is taught by Mrs. Dayna Hendricks, who also teaches AP Language and Composition, College Readiness English 12, Intervention, and Yearbook. Mrs. Hendricks was approved as part time faculty by Youngstown State University academic departments to teach this college class. CCP instructors are required to have the same qualifications as YSU faculty on campus. This class is available to students because Beaver Local teamed with YSU to allow Mrs. Hendricks to teach this course. The course is a dual enrollment program administered by the Metro Credit Education Outreach Office at YSU. The CCP class is monitored to insure that the class rigor meets University standards.

In college writing, we touch on many subjects that will work to our benefit when we graduate high school and move on to college. For example, we write ten pages each period of nine weeks. That’s a total of twenty pages, or four five page essays when we finish the course. So far, we have written a literacy narrative essay, a 500 word essay for college applications, a textual analysis essay, and we are now working on a compare and contrast essay.

As well as perfecting our writing skills, we also study the “soapstone” method. The soapstone method stands for speaker, occasion, audience, purpose, subject, and tone. Studying this method is greatly beneficial while writing long essays.

Personally, I found that taking this class gave me a real wake-up-call to what college will be like. Before taking this course, I had no idea how to write an essay, let alone a five-page essay. I found that this class incredibly increased my writing ability, and I would encourage any student at a lower grade level to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity.

McDonald’s

McDonald’s

In recent events, the McDonald’s in Calcutta has been torn down because they are getting a new building. The new building is estimated to be finished in 2-3 months. Hopefully, they have a fully operational ice cream machine! The old building was torn down 3 days ago. As we’ve seen with new buildings in Calcutta this new McDonald’s should be promising!

Beaver Local Board And Community Come Together To Finish Baseball & Softball Fields

Beaver Local Schools has been working on making new baseball and softball fields for three years, and the community has stepped in to help them. The community scheduled board meetings and raised thousands of dollars to buy the materials needed to finish the field. The school board hired an external company to replace the infield dirt with new and put down sod for a grass infield.
The community said that they want to ensure safety for the athletes that play on the fields, and are supportive of the field being fixed and finished. The infield dirt has to be removed and replaced because it had crushed brick and stones all throughout the infield and outfield and posed a safety concern for the players. The community would like to see the field be playable for this season, but say that safety is their main concern.
